AMERICAN COLLEGE OF RHEUMATOLOGY 1990 CRITERIA FOR THE DIAGNOSIS OF HENOCH-SCHONLEIN PURPURA: CLASSIFICATION TREE

1. Palpable purpura: Not associated with thrombocytopenia.

2. Age less than 20. Patient age at disease onset.

3. Gastrointestinal bleeding. Associated with either melena, bloody stools or guaiac positive stools.

4. Extravascular or perivascular granulocytes on biopsy of associated skin lesions.

Two of the four criteria are required for making the diagnosis. This classification format has a sensitivity and specificity of approximately 89% for diagnosing Henoch-Schonlein purpura.
