GUIDELINES FOR THE TREATMENT OF SYPHILIS

incubating, primary, secondary, or early latent syphilis | benzathine PCN 2.4 million units IM for one single dose | tetracycline 500mg PO QID x 15 days or
doxycycline 100 mg PO BID x 14 days or erythromycin 500 mg PO QID x 14 days or ceftriaxone 125 mg IM QD x 10 days or 250 mg IM QOD x 5 doses or 1000 mg IM x 4 doses |
syphilitic infection lasting longer than 1 year to include latent, late benign, and cardiovascular syphilis | benzathine PCN 2.4 million units IM each week for 3 weeks | tetracycline 500 mg PO QID x 4 weeks or
doxycycline 100 mg PO BID x 4 weeks |
neurosyphilis |
aqueous crystalline PCN G 2-4 million units IV q 4 hours x 10 days followed by benzathine PCN G 2.4 million units IM each week x 3 weeks |
ceftriaxone 1 gm IM/IV QD x 14 days or tetracycline 500 mg PO QID x 4 weeks |
pregnant women |
appropriate PCN therapy for the stage of infection as described above |
desensitization to PCN followed by appropriate therapy for the stage of infection as described above |
